Distinguishing Characteristics
Antibiotic producer #30 is a mixed sample. Poor lawn growth occurred, but antibiotic activity of isolate #30 can still be observed. In the above picture, please note the small zone of clearing that formed around isolate #30 on the S. epidermidis plate. Additionally, the colony morphology of Isolate #30 can be observed. Upon streaking producer #30, two different types of colonies were observed - one that was more beige in color and the other a pale yellow. One, likely the more beige colony, appears to produce an extrapolysaccharide. BIOCHEMICAL TESTS: Gram stain = G- (but can clearly see it is a mixed sample by the larger, more purple [thus indicating G+ for those bacteria] cells). 3% KOH = watery test (negative test result) indicated G+ (the opposite of the Gram stain; likely due to mixed culture). Blood Agar = gamma hemolysis (no hemolysis). TSI Agar = red slant (K) / red butt (K) (neither glucose, sucrose, not lactose fermented; no hydrogen gas; no hydrogen sulfide). Starch Agar = no exoenzymes. Catalase = positive. Oxidase = negative.
